Information is power

'Information is power' is an old adage, but one that rings true in every situation. Information capture, or knowledge management, is fast becoming the true competitive advantage of any company. People are certainly valuable resources, and the information they hold is useful, but far more so if shared with others. This is the dilemma facing many businesses - how to find a balance between information overload and a lack of information to do the job required.
What is business intelligence?
Originally, information sharing was a case of inputting data into self-created databases, Excel spreadsheets and bespoke applications to simply 'capture knowledge' so others could benefit from it. But the information quickly became outdated, was inaccurate and often in different formats, so it wasn't reliable. Then came the wave of ERP, CRM and SCM applications and information garnering became slightly more sophisticated. Now the problem is collating all the information held in those different applications into one central repository where it can be viewed, analysed, customised, shared and used to help make better informed, real-time decisions.
At its most basic, business intelligence is about harnessing information to make your business more agile and secure. BI uses historic information to predict future trends, captures figures from different divisions to assess profitability, analyses data to establish successful product lines, and gives executives a 'dashboard' view of the company to identify areas that need attention. The list of key applications is almost endless.
